XBox 360 at E3, day 1

At the first day of E3, Microsoft announced that the 360 will be backwards compatible, that it will integrate with the PSP and Ipod (somehow), that it will feature a free standard version of XBox Live (online play) for all system owners rather than relying on some subscription service, that Final Fantasy XI will be available through XBox, and that they're planning to release 35 - 40 games in the next year. Amongst these are a prequel to Perfect Dark, as I reported before, along with Oblivion (sequel to Morrowind, which will be narrated by none other than Patrick Stuart) and a slough of sequels to original games (NBA, NFL, Call of Duty, Grand Turismo, etc.). Another title will be called "Lost Odyssey", produced by the creators of Final Fantasy and hoping to break the monopoly on the wildly popular Japanese RPG genre currently held by Playstation.

Edit: Numerous websites including this one are now reporting that the XBox 360 will cost $250-$300 without a hard drive, and around $360 (har har) with it. The hard drive will be required for some backwards compatibility, as some of the older games relied on it.

All you do is make me want to have sex with this thing, but you don't tell me how much it will cost!

In the words of Ted Dansen, "take what you can get."

I still haven't heard, but I'll look.

Some astute tech sites are noting that the backwards compatibility will be 'selective' (as per a MS statement). Robbie Bach (Microsoft's senior vice president in charge of the home and entertainment division) said that it won't necessarily run all of the older Xbox titles but instead, run the "top-selling" games. This sounds very much like old 'top sellers' will be ported, so you'll have to go out and re-buy (or perhaps trade in) your old titles for your new ones.
(This makes sense-- the two xboxii have different processor architectures)

The PS3 *is* backwards compatible; no need to buy games again.

The Rev. Dr. Caler needs a cold shower. The XBox 360 won't provide *that* much bang for your buck.

If you're trying to make the case that PS3 is *better* than XB360, I certainly can't argue with you. Twice the processing speed, built in wifi, 7 controllers, total backwards compatibility. It's a much better system as far as the hardware is concerned.

It seems that "backwards compatible" would imply not having to *buy* the games again. I'd be surprised if we even have to trade in our CD's. Before re-supplying all of those CD's, I'd expect the 360 to feature an emulator, and it sounds like the emulator won't provide all of the same features as the original system, so some of the games won't work.

Regardless, you're absolutely right that the PS3 has a lot more to offer. I think XBox's selling point is going to be better support for game titles and a better online community. I haven't read anything about Sony's answer to XBox live. Everyone who buys the 360 gets a watered down version of XBox Live for free.
